Nestled atop a rocky hill at the outermost coast of Fosten, Norway is a stunning cabin that is perhaps one of the best examples of a well thought out and designed sustainable structure. This little gem was carefully designed and molded in respect to the local terrain, panoramic views and specific climate.
Built by non other than one of Norway’s most respected architectural firms Fantastic Norway, this cabin explores the context of a sustainable space, form and function in relation to the environment surrounding it. This approach to design is a reoccurring theme in every project Fantastic Norway tackles.
Since its foundation in 2004 by Håkon Matre Aasarød and Erlend Blakstad Haffner, Fantastic Norway has been on a mission to return to the roots of architecture where the firm would be an active voice of society. Fantastic Norway often goes though great lengths, even travelling vast distances in its signature bright red caravan to hold discussions and debates, which serve as valuable knowledgebase of the cultural needs of its society.
The Fosten cabin is built around a cluster of sheltered wood outdoor spaces engulfed by large glass windows that serve to draw plenty of light to the internal living spaces. In design, the building plays with shadow and lights against the backdrop of jagged edges & clean lines. Glass and wood, both highly reclaimable elements are used as the predominant materials. This both plays with the natural shapes of the rocky hill it sits on. In addition, the plain approach to design embraces the simple pragmatic building the local culture endears.
